Mentorship Services / Skills Training
This service is designed to support adolescents and adults needing the support of other dedicated adults. The goal of this program is to support and guide clients, especially in the decision-making process. We work especially well with those individuals with disabilities who are in need of support, affirmation, direction and guidance.
What is a mentor?
Mentoring is the presence, support and guidance of caring individuals who, along with parents or guardians, provide youth with support, advice, friendship, reinforcement and constructive examples of how to succeed. Our mentors are dedicated adults who have a passion and interest in working with adolescents and youth as well as providing guidance and support to individual mentees.
Who needs a mentor and what can a mentor do?
A mentor is a perfect option for an individual who needs a friend, a coach, an advisor, or someone to support and motivate them in order to accomplish goals and objectives. We have a team of professionals and dedicated adults who can provide you with the following:
Advice - to help you evaluate your options and make better decisions
Access - to a new world of ideas and experiences you never thought of
Advocacy - advocate and speak out on your behalf on important situations
Support - for parents, families and educators in helping students aspire and achieve
Positive alternative options - provide alternative and positive ways for young people to spend free time
Help/support - for youth and adolescents facing daily obstacles in school, at home or in the community
Provide skills, knowledge and guidance - to kindle enthusiasm and share knowledge in order to ensure that individual mentees' dreams are realized to the fullest potential
While there are many things your mentor will be able to do, there are also some things he/she will not do. For example, your mentor will not engage in such things as:
- Making critical decisions for you
- Enabling you to do things you both know you should not be doing
- Taking the place of your parent, social worker/legal guardian
- Forcing you into doing things you do not want to do
Expected Outcomes: What can you expect by participating in the mentorship program?
- Improved school attendance
- Enhanced academic achievement
- Increased self-confidence
- Support for positive behavior
- Reduction in the rate of recidivism
- Stability and improved social skills
- Support and encouragement for achieving goals
